From Hen House to Farm Shop: The Journey of Our Eggs

There is something special about picking up a box of eggs from the shelves at Gullivers Farm Shop. They may look simple, but behind every carton is a story of care, responsibility, teamwork and learning.

Our eggs begin their journey with our flock of biodynamically farmed hens, raised to the highest standards of animal welfare. But the story does not end with the hens. Every egg that reaches the farm shop has passed through the hands of people we support, who play a vital role in every stage of the process.

This is a story about good farming, meaningful work and the pride that comes from being part of something bigger.

Caring for the Hens

Long before the eggs reach the farm shop shelves, the day begins with caring for the hens themselves.

The people we support play an important role in the daily management of our flock, working alongside experienced staff to ensure the birds remain healthy, comfortable and well cared for. Every task contributes to the high welfare standards that sit at the heart of our biodynamic farming practices.

A typical day involves much more than collecting eggs. The team help muck out the hen houses, replace bedding, top up food and water, and maintain clean, comfortable living spaces where the hens can thrive. They learn how to observe the flock closely, carrying out regular welfare checks and understanding what healthy behaviour looks like.

Part of this work includes checking for red mites, a common challenge in poultry keeping. The team learn how to monitor for signs of infestation and help spread diatomaceous earth throughout the hen houses to discourage mites from harbouring in cracks and crevices. These tasks require patience, consistency and attention to detail, helping to build genuine animal husbandry skills.

Through these daily routines, companions develop responsibility, confidence and a strong sense of ownership over their work. There is real pride in knowing that the health and welfare of the flock depends on the care and commitment they provide each day.

Collecting the Eggs

Once the hens have been cared for, attention turns to the eggs themselves.

Egg collection is a task that requires concentration and care. The team move through the houses gathering eggs, checking them as they go and ensuring they are handled carefully from the moment they leave the nest.

As the eggs are collected, companions learn the importance of quality, consistency and attention to detail. They begin to understand how every stage of the process contributes to the finished product and how their actions directly impact what customers eventually take home.

For many, there is a great sense of achievement in seeing the results of work that started with caring for the hens and ends with a product ready for sale.

Preparing for the Farm Shop

After collection, the eggs continue their journey.

The team work together to inspect, sort and prepare the eggs before they make their way to the farm shop. This stage requires accuracy, organisation and teamwork, with everyone playing their part in maintaining the high standards our customers expect.

These tasks provide valuable opportunities to develop workplace skills, from following procedures and maintaining quality standards to working collaboratively and taking responsibility for a finished product.

What makes this experience particularly meaningful is that the work has a real outcome. The eggs are not part of a training exercise; they are a genuine product that customers purchase and enjoy. The people involved can see the direct results of their efforts every time they visit the shop and spot the eggs on the shelves.

Learning Through Meaningful Work

At Gullivers, the eggs are about much more than food production.

Every stage of the process provides opportunities for learning, personal development and achievement. Through caring for the hens, maintaining their environment, monitoring welfare, collecting eggs and preparing them for sale, companions are developing practical skills that have real value both within and beyond the farm.

We are currently introducing ASDAN accreditation into this area of work, creating opportunities for people to gain recognised achievements alongside the practical experience they build every day.

This means that the knowledge, commitment and skills developed through caring for the flock can be formally recognised and celebrated. Participants will be able to build evidence of their learning and work towards qualifications that reflect the contribution they make.

It is another step in creating pathways that recognise ability, encourage growth and provide opportunities for the future.

Part of Something Bigger

What makes these eggs truly special is that they are part of a much wider story.

The journey from hen house to farm shop connects farming, retail, learning and community. The people who care for the hens are often the same people who see customers purchasing the finished product, giving them a unique understanding of the entire journey.

They see firsthand how the work they do each day contributes to the success of the wider enterprise. They understand that the welfare of the hens, the quality of the eggs and the experience of our customers are all connected.

That connection transforms daily tasks into meaningful work and creates a genuine sense of purpose and belonging.

A Story in Every Box

When customers take home a box of Gullivers eggs, they are supporting far more than a farming operation.

They are supporting biodynamic farming, high standards of animal welfare and opportunities for people to develop valuable skills through meaningful work. They are supporting a workplace where contribution is recognised, achievements are celebrated and every person has the opportunity to grow.

Most importantly, they are supporting a team of dedicated people who take great pride in caring for the hens, preparing the eggs and seeing the fruits of their labour reach the shelves of the farm shop.

From the first feed bucket of the morning to the final carton on display, every egg tells a story of care, teamwork, learning and pride. And that is what makes them truly special.
