Growing Our Egg Production Together

Fresh eggs are at the heart of life here at Sturts and Gullivers Farms. They symbolise so much more than food — they’re a sign of care, community, and the meaningful work that takes place on our farms every day. As we look ahead, we’re excited to share how we’re growing our egg production with your support.

Why We’re Expanding Our Flock

At Sturts and Gullivers Farm, our hens are a much-loved part of daily life, and the eggs they lay have become a staple in many of your kitchens. We know how popular they are — and we also know that at the moment, we’re not quite keeping up with the demand.

That’s why our dedicated Hen Team, including the adults we support here on the farm, are working hard behind the scenes to grow our capacity. It’s not just about producing more eggs; it’s about giving the people we support meaningful roles, learning new skills, and taking pride in contributing to something that the whole community enjoys.

A New Hen House Thanks to You

Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts this year — and the generosity of our wider community — we’re delighted to share some exciting news. Later this autumn, we will be welcoming a brand-new hen house to the farm.

Pullets Arriving in October

In October, we’ll also be introducing a flock of pullets (that’s the correct name for young hens) who will soon grow into productive layers. Because we follow biodynamic principles, there are only two times each year when it’s possible for us to welcome new hens onto the farm. So although there’s a little wait until October, this is an important part of farming in harmony with nature’s rhythms, ensuring our hens are healthy, happy, and well-cared for.

Building Skills and Confidence

This growth isn’t just about more eggs — it’s also about more opportunities for the people we support. Caring for the hens provides practical training in animal welfare, daily routines, and farm responsibilities. Collecting, cleaning, and packaging the eggs helps develop skills in organisation, attention to detail, and working as part of a team.

Perhaps most importantly, these tasks build confidence and independence. Every stage of the process — from feeding the hens to seeing the eggs on the shelves in our shop — allows the people we support to be part of something they can take real pride in. It’s meaningful work that connects directly to our community.

Why Supporting Local Farms Matters

We want to take this moment to thank you — our customers, neighbours, and friends — for standing by us. Every egg you buy, every meal you enjoy, and every kind word of encouragement makes this possible. Supporting your local farm doesn’t just put fresh, nutritious food on your table; it keeps small-scale farming alive, protects the land, and creates opportunities for people of all abilities to be part of something meaningful.

Looking Ahead Together

Together, we’re not just producing eggs. We’re building community, creating opportunities, and making sure that farming has a bright and sustainable future.

From all of us at Sturts and Gullivers Farm — thank you for being part of the journey.

“Together, we’re not just producing eggs — we’re building community.”
