Facing the Challenges Together: Farming in a Changing Climate

Farming the Way Nature Intended

At Gullivers and Sturts Farm, we are proud to farm in a way that nurtures the land and cares for our animals. Our cows are 100% grass-fed – grazing in the fields during the warmer months and eating hay we harvest in spring to sustain them through the winter. We never use pesticides, and we work in harmony with the rhythms of the seasons.

When the Weather Works Against Us

But this year, those rhythms have been disrupted. The lack of rain has had a major impact on the grass growth, which in turn affects how much hay we can harvest and store. Normally, by this time of year, our barn is full with enough hay to see our herd through the colder months. This year, it is less than half full.

Searching for Solutions

That leaves us with a very real challenge: how do we make sure our cattle are fed well through the winter? For the first time in many years, we will need to purchase hay from elsewhere – and with shortages across the country, prices are soaring. We are actively looking at all possible options, but the truth is, there is no easy answer. We’re working hard to find solutions, knowing that one way or another, our cattle must come first.

Why Your Support Matters

We want to share this reality with you – our customers and community – because every litre of milk, every cut of beef, every egg, and every loaf of bread that you buy here is connected to these wider challenges. By choosing to support local, biodynamic and organic farming, you are helping us keep going, even when times are tough.

Your support means more than ever right now. It allows us to keep farming in a way that protects the soil, supports biodiversity, and ensures our animals are well cared for. It also means we can continue offering meaningful work and training opportunities for adults with varying support needs – something at the heart of all we do.

Looking Ahead Together

The farming world is facing big questions around climate, sustainability, and resilience. We don’t pretend to have all the answers – and this winter is a clear example of that – but we know that sharing our journey openly is one way we can bring people closer to the food they eat and the challenges behind producing it.

So, when you next pick up milk, eggs, or meat from us, know that you are part of the solution. You are not just buying food – you are supporting farming that is kind to the land, to animals, and to people.

Thank you for being with us through the sunshine, the rain, and sometimes, the lack of it.
