A New Chapter for Gullivers

Why we're changing our menu and putting quality, purpose and people first

Introduction

Over the next few weeks, you'll notice some changes at Gullivers Farm Shop & Kitchen as we introduce a new menu.

Before we do, we wanted to share a little of the story behind that decision because, for us, this is about much more than food.

Many of you have been with us since the very beginning. You've watched the farm shop grow, seen familiar faces develop new skills and confidence, supported our farm, our kitchen and our market garden, and become part of the community that makes Gullivers what it is today. Because of that, we feel it's important to be open about why we're making these changes and what they mean for the future.

It Started With A Simple Idea

When Gullivers first opened its doors, the dream was never simply to create a farm shop with a café attached.

Of course, we wanted to serve great coffee, great food and create somewhere people enjoyed spending time, but the real purpose sat much deeper than that.

As part of Sturts Community Trust, everything we do is built around creating meaningful opportunities for adults with varying support needs. Whether that's caring for animals on the farm, growing vegetables in the market garden, working in the shop, helping prepare food in the kitchen or welcoming customers through the door, the goal has always been the same: to create an environment where people can learn, develop skills, gain confidence and be proud of the contribution they make.

Many of you who visit regularly have seen that journey happen. You've watched people grow in confidence, take on new responsibilities and develop skills that perhaps they never thought possible. You've celebrated those successes with us and, in many cases, built genuine relationships with the people we support.

That is what makes Gullivers special.

More Than A Meal

The food has always been part of that story.

When you sit down for breakfast or lunch, there is a good chance that elements of that meal have been grown, reared, prepared or served by the very people whose development sits at the heart of our social enterprise.

There is something incredibly powerful about seeing a process through from start to finish. From collecting eggs in the morning and harvesting vegetables from the market garden, to preparing ingredients in the kitchen and serving a meal to a customer, every stage creates opportunities for people to learn, contribute and take pride in what they have achieved.

For us, success has never simply been about how many meals we serve. It's about the confidence built along the way, the skills developed behind the scenes and the sense of achievement that comes from being part of something meaningful.

The Challenge We Could No Longer Ignore

Over the past few years, like many hospitality businesses across the country, we've faced increasing challenges recruiting skilled kitchen staff, particularly chefs.

We've worked incredibly hard to maintain the menu our customers have come to know whilst navigating the reality of operating with vacancies that have remained difficult to fill. Our existing team have shown tremendous commitment throughout that period and we're hugely grateful for everything they have done.

As demand has continued to grow, we've found ourselves balancing two important responsibilities. The first was our ambition to continue growing Gullivers and offering a wide range of food choices. The second was our responsibility to ensure the people we support continued to receive the structure, stability and opportunities that are so important to their development.

Over time, it became clear that something had to change.

Choosing People First

One of the most important things we can provide through our social enterprise is stability.

For many of the people we support, routine, consistency and structure are not simply helpful; they are essential. They provide the foundations from which confidence grows, skills develop and independence flourishes.

As we reflected on where Gullivers was heading, we realised that trying to maintain an increasingly complex operation without the staffing levels needed to support it was making it harder to provide the environment we wanted for the people at the heart of our organisation.

The people we support deserve opportunities that are meaningful, achievable and properly supported. They deserve environments where they can thrive rather than simply keep pace.

That realisation has shaped every decision we've made moving forward.

Returning To What Matters Most

The menu we are about to launch is smaller than before, but the thinking behind it is bigger than ever.

A more focused menu allows us to concentrate on quality, consistency and purpose. It allows the people we support to become more involved in every stage of the process and gives us the opportunity to create a more stable learning environment where skills can continue to flourish.

Just as importantly, it allows us to refocus on something that has always mattered deeply to us: quality.

Our farm team work tirelessly throughout the seasons. Our market gardeners nurture crops from seed to harvest. Our kitchen team transform those ingredients into meals for the wider community. Every meal served should reflect the care, effort and dedication that has gone into producing those ingredients.

Whilst we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved, we also know there have been times when staffing pressures have made it difficult to consistently achieve the standards we set for ourselves.

We believe our customers deserve better than that and the people we support deserve to be proud of everything that leaves our kitchen.

Building The Future The Right Way

This isn't about lowering our ambitions. It's about building stronger foundations.

We continue to recruit into key kitchen positions and remain incredibly excited about the future of Gullivers. As our team grows, there may well be opportunities to expand our menu again, but any future growth must be built around the same principles that inspired Gullivers in the first place: creating opportunities, developing skills, supporting people and serving food we're proud of.

Because when we look ahead, we don't measure success by how many items appear on a menu.

We measure it by the opportunities created, the confidence developed, the relationships built and the impact made on people's lives.

Thank You For Being Part Of The Story

Finally, thank you.

Thank you for supporting us through the good days, the challenging days and everything in between. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us. Thank you for encouraging the people we support, celebrating their achievements and making them feel part of something bigger.

Every coffee purchased, every meal enjoyed and every conversation shared helps create opportunities for people to learn, develop and thrive.

Your support means far more than supporting a farm shop.

It supports a community, a purpose and a belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute when given the opportunity.

We are incredibly proud of what Gullivers has become, grateful for the support we've received and excited for this next chapter.

We look forward to welcoming you to experience our new menu very soon.
